The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Skloot's debut book, took more than a decade to research and write, and instantly became a New York Times best-seller. You can read a selection of Rebecca Skloot's magazine writing on the Articles page of this site. She and her father, Floyd Skloot, are co-editors of The Best American Science Writing 2011. She has worked as a correspondent for WNYC’s Radiolab and PBS’s Nova ScienceNOW. She specializes in narrative science writing and has explored a wide range of topics, including goldfish surgery, tissue ownership rights, race and medicine, food politics, and packs of wild dogs in Manhattan. Rebecca Skloot is an award winning science writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine O, The Oprah Magazine Discover and many other publications. Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences. She was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Did it hurt her when researchers infected her cells with viruses and shot them into space? What happened to her sister, Elsie, who died in a mental institution at the age of fifteen? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family-especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah, who was devastated to learn about her mother’s cells. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family - past and present - is inextricably connected to the history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia - a land of wooden quarters for enslaved people, faith healings, and voodoo - to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping and have been bought and sold by the billions. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons-as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. ![]() She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her enslaved ancestors, yet her cells-taken without her knowledge-became one of the most important tools in medicine. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. ![]()

![]() ![]() Feel free to disagree with Ludwig that PAC-MAN 99 is bad, though he'll question your tastes if you do. KoopaTV is free and has no source of revenue or monetisation. ![]() One notable exception to the “since it's free you are the product” rule is KoopaTV. You could even say Namco's generic-or lying-terms represent contract fraud. An agreement-and it is an agreement, that's what you're holding down the A button for-is mutual. We should treat them like they'd treat us when they misrepresent their agreement as well. You'd be in trouble in Namco's eyes if you misrepresent your end of the agreement. There's actually very little purpose in making disclosures-that you need to acknowledge-if what you're disclosing isn't reflected in reality. I guess the real complaint in this article is that companies should customise their legal documents in accordance to what's being offered. It's very valuable data to know that you'll wittingly spend money on a bad, low-effort product. After all, since it's free, you are the product. And I guess if you pay $30 for the DLC, you're still the product and they'll still track you, but now it's much more interesting for them because you'll probably be on their list of PROFITABLE suckers who they will go to first for more money in the future. Or two, they are collecting data, and there's nothing you can do about it besides not use the game. One, Namco is actually not collecting any analytics data, so therefore there is nothing to opt out of. Who knows what “and perform other analytics” could mean. Now sort of concerned about what Namco thinks about me and what they plan to do. Unfortunately, the option doesn't exist.I admit to have then explored the game's features (or lack thereof) and played a few of the 99-person matches. (To my knowledge, the $30 DLC doesn't include one, either.) There is no opt-out option in PAC-MAN 99's settings menu. Ultimate, if only because it's hard to find anyone on that character selection screen, let alone PAC-MAN.Īfter agreeing to the Privacy Policy, the first thing I did was want to do as the Privacy Policy suggested and go to the options menu in PAC-MAN 99, which is called the Setting menu. I definitely don't want to be marketed about PAC-MAN because I'm the kind of person that gets mad every time I go to the character selection screen on Super Smash Bros. You may like the idea of Namco doing special things with your game analytics and maybe marketing things just to you. “You can opt-out of this use through the options menu in the Game.” I took a screenshot of an interesting part about Game Analytics, which sort of implies that Namco is going to do things with your game data, though not sell it to third parties: ![]() So after that 14-page EULA/terms of service is that 6-page Privacy Policy, which I read. You need to hold down the A button to agree to the EULA. At least at 14+6 pages, the legal documents are substantially shorter than the 42+42 pages you see from Activision. Typical of free Bandai Namco experiences like Dragon Ball FighterZ, you need to get through a terms of service and privacy policy to play anything. Now, I have never liked PAC-MAN- that's an understatement-but I figured I'd try it at least once. (That's for the game modes and the cosmetic stuff you can buy the cosmetics separately but not the game modes.) All in all, you'll have to pay $30 to get the most out of it. The purpose of the game is to try to get you to buy downloadable content for different game skins based on other Namco properties, as well as pay for game modes like private battle and time attack. Make-up brands like to use this feature by having fans guess what color a new lipstick or a new eye shadow might have. To boost engagement even more, you could offer a prize to the first person who guesses correctly. Give your fans several clues by asking them questions – and have them guess the correct answer. Second, it is an additional way to get useful information out there and your customers will appreciate the extra help. This approach makes sense because first, you are showing your customers content you already know they are curious about. You can obviously feature a FAQ section on your website, but in addition, it can be helpful to also use interactive question stickers to answer FAQs on Instagram Stories. I'm happy to say that the gameplay remains completely intact with the move to new hardware. Otherwise, it plays just about the same as the others on the collection.50m Played(played the original arcade version on the Flycast emulator) This is another outstanding Metal Slug game. This is particularly noticeable on the status bars. The PSP version on this collection suffers compared to the other games, since its screen can’t handle the higher resolution the game was designed for, resulting in squished looking graphics. The only release outside of Japan was in the Metal Slug Anthology, which includes many of the same bonuses, but lacks the Combat School mode. Also included is the return of the the Combat School mode, this time with two new instructors – Mary and Lily. This version included a huge gallery, featuring tons of concept art yanked from the other home ports and full soundtracks for all seven games. Metal Slug 6 got a standalone release for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. While it uses some of the musical motifs from the earlier Metal Slug games, it has a very distinct feel that draws from many different genres, including an Asian/techno fusion for the China level, and a Hitoshi Sakimoto-esque orchestral piece in the fourth stage. The soundtrack this time was (mostly) composed by Manabu Namiki, known for other arcade shooters like Battle Garegga and Dodonpachi Daioujou. Like many much older games, playing on the easiest mode only lets you get close to the end of the game before getting a “please try harder mode” message. In one of the hidden paths, you can actually control the mother alien from Metal Slug 3 and rain destruction against the night sky. General Morden and the aliens are back, although this time everyone bands together to fight a new menace – a race of creatures living underneath the Earth’s crust. Thankfully the boss battles are much more inspired, especially the crazy robot with a dismembered brain in a tank. The last level features a rather boring Dig Dug-esque section where you drill through the dirt, an area which should’ve been left on the cutting room floor. The levels themselves aren’t anything special either – fight through a jungle, fight through urban China… it’s still a bit uninspired. All of the objects now cast shadows, which it looks a bit strange when you first play it. The color scheme of the previous games was always a bit muted, but here it just seems dreary. The move to the Atomiswave is a bit of a mixed bag – on one hard, it allows for some awesome effects, as the camera zooms out during certain boss battles (think Samurai Showdown or any other SNK game that used scaling), but the backgrounds are all high resolution, and possess a bland feel that pales compared to the pixel art of the earlier games. ![]() There’s a single brand new weapon called the Zantestu, a short range sword that’s massively powerful. Metal Slug 6 is the first (and only) entry to run on the Atomiswave platform, leaving the old Neo Geo hardware behind – which, when this was released in 2006, was over fifteen years old.Ī first for this Metal Slug game is that the different playable characters have different attributes – Marco has a stronger pistol, Tarma is an expert at vehicular combat, Fio starts with a Heavy Machine Gun every time she dies, and Eri has double the amount of grenades, in addition the ability to toss them in every direction. ![]() |
